Aquanova's story began in 1948 in Maastricht under the name "Internationale Handelsonderneming Matram", founded by Mr. Jean Piereij I and his brother Henry. The initial focus was on trading a wide array of products for domestic use. The range of products for bathroom decoration soon ranked in a premium position, giving reason to grant it a label of its own: The brand “Aquanova”, dedicated to fine bathroom textiles and hardware, was born.
In 1989, Matram International NV was founded in Maasmechelen, Belgium, as a subsidiary initially dedicated to providing warehousing services for the Aquanova brand.
In 1992, after the decease of founder Jean Piereij, his son Jean Piereij Jr. took over the management. Soon after, the company names “Matram” were relabeled to “Aquanova” and all activities focused on bathroom products. In the subsequent years, all activities were concentrated in the Maasmechelen branch, while the Maastricht branch focused on Aquanova's intellectual property.Following its move to Belgium, Aquanova focused on refining its expertise, specializing in various household items like shower curtains, bath mats, table linens etc. However, a pivotal strategic shift came about, leading the focus into the Wellness segment, particularly on bath linen and related accessories. Presently, the role of managing director is assumed by Mrs. Tamara Hecker, appointed as CEO on June 1st, 2021.
